The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has removed three electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its list of registered devices. They are Keep Tracking, Rollingtrans ELD – ACCURATE ONE, and RT ELD Plus – ACCURATE PLUS.
This decision, effective Nov. 18, follows the companies’ failure to meet the requirement that “an ELD without a printer be designed so that an authorized safety official may reasonably view the display without entering the commercial motor vehicle.”
The decision stems from the devices failing to meet the minimum requirements outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. FMCSA has instructed motor carriers using these ELDs to take immediate action to maintain compliance.
Motor carriers are required to discontinue the use of these revoked ELDs and switch to paper logs or logging software to track hours of service. By Jan. 17, 2025, all carriers must replace these devices with compliant ELDs from the agency’s Registered Devices list.
Transition period
During the transition period, FMCSA has advised safety officials not to cite drivers using these revoked devices for violations such as:
- 395.8(a)(1) – No record of duty status
- 395.22(a) – Failing to use a registered ELD
Instead, officials are encouraged to review hours-of-service data using paper logs, logging software, or the ELD’s display as a backup method.
Drivers and carriers who fail to replace the revoked ELDs by the Jan. 17 deadline risk being placed out of service and cited for operating without a compliant device under the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance OOS Criteria.
The ELDs, the federal agency noted, could return to the list of registered devices if the providers address the deficiencies. The agency encouraged motor carriers to act promptly to avoid compliance issues.
