From the driver’s seat: Meet Ethan Fitzgerald

Ethan Fitzgerald’s love for travel has taken him from guiding students on cross-country trips to navigating the streets of New York City as a professional bus driver.

At just 25, Fitzgerald says he knows he made the right career choice when he went to work for Affordable Limousine in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after graduating from college. So far, his journey is filled with memorable experiences, and he’s eager for more adventures on the road.

Bus & Motorcoach News recently interviewed Fitzgerald about his passion for driving, the highlights of his career, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

What’s the biggest tip you’ve ever received, and what’s the story behind it?

The biggest tip I ever received was $2,500 from a university after I completed a recruiting trip to New York City for their jazz band. It was my first time driving in the city, and the schedule was tight. One night, I realized the group wouldn’t have time for breakfast the next morning because of a quick turnaround. So, I picked up donuts on my way into the city. The customer later told me that this simple gesture made a huge difference, and it really stuck with them. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.

What’s the strangest or most bizarre group you’ve driven?

I haven’t had a bizarre group yet, but I’m sure that day will come!

What’s your go-to phrase?

“Sit back and enjoy the ride.”

How did you become a driver?

After graduating from Central Michigan University, I moved back to Grand Rapids and learned about Affordable Limousine through another driver, Mandy Zimmerman, during a trip to Louisiana. She spoke highly of the company, so when I returned to Grand Rapids, I reached out to Omar Gomez-Mulero, the company’s safety trainer, and joined the team.

What do you like most about driving coaches?

At 18, I began driving school buses. For a few years, I worked as an associate tour director at Cedar Point Amusement Park, where I guided international students on cultural trips. These experiences ignited my passion for the field and eventually led me to pursue motorcoach driving as a career.

How many miles or states have you driven a bus?

I’ve driven through more than 10 states but lost track of the miles!

What is your favorite or least favorite destination and why?

My favorite destination is New York City. The city never sleeps, and there’s always something new to discover—a new story, a new adventure, and countless memories to create.

What’s your favorite bus feature?

My favorite bus feature has to be the parking brake. Once you push it in, you know you’re about to embark on a new adventure. It’s like the official start of a journey.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received?

You and my son are the same age, and I’m scared to let him drive my car. You handle this bus better than he drives a car.

What’s your best piece of advice for a newbie?

Just do it. Push yourself—you might be surprised at what you’re capable of.

What’s your career highlight?

Driving through New York City and Florida, especially visiting Disney World. Both places are filled with excitement and unforgettable experiences.
