Krapf school bus drivers sweep state competition

Drivers from the Krapf School Bus division of West Chester, Pennsylvania, earned the top four positions in their division at the 43rd Annual Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Safety Competition. Ruth DelVecchio won the competition for the second time and earned a trip to the International School Bus Driver Safety Competition in Austin, Texas.

DelVecchio edged co-worker Shanon O’Brien by one point, 473 to 472, in the final standings for drivers of conventional school buses. Krapf drivers Joanne Cowan and David Szydlowski claimed the next two positions.

Company teammates Gideon Eele (8th), Michelle Sharp (11th) and Alyssa Gincley (15th) also finished at the top of the 84-driver field.

The competition was held in June by the Pennsylvania School Bus Association and began with a written examination developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Skills tests included a physical and verbal bus inspection, height judgment, diminishing clearance, simulated bus stop, railroad crossings, backing and curb line parking.

DelVecchio was competing for the tenth time and won the state competition in 2015.

Krapf serves school districts in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. The Krapf Group includes motorcoach operator Krapf Transportation.
